Liferafts under SOLAS are regulated mainly by SOLAS Chapter III (Life-saving appliances and arrangements), with detailed performance and testing standards in the LSA Code (International Life-Saving Appliance Code).
In practical terms, SOLAS expects ships to:
- Carry approved liferafts (and/or lifeboats) with capacity for all persons on board, as required for the ship type and voyage.
- Stow and launch them so they can be boarded and released quickly in an emergency (including float-free / hydrostatic release where required).
- Provide required equipment packs (food, water, signalling, first aid, etc.) as specified for the raft type and voyage.
- Maintain, inspect, and service liferafts at the intervals required by the Administration / recognised organisation (often annual service at an approved station).
- Train the crew through drills and familiarisation so everyone knows muster points, boarding, and raft operation (linked to PST / BST training).
Exam tip: SOLAS Chapter III says what must be provided and arranged; the LSA Code says how the appliance must perform. Exact carriage numbers and pack types depend on ship type, length/GT, and area of operation — always check the ship’s Record of Equipment and flag rules.
