For an engine-room fire on a cargo ship, the main SOLAS focus is Chapter II-2 (fire protection/detection/extinction), typically including:
- Fire detection and alarm arrangements for machinery spaces
- Fixed fire-extinguishing systems required for the machinery space (as applicable to the ship)
- Fire integrity of bulkheads/decks, ventilation shut-downs, and fuel isolation
- Portable extinguishers, fire pumps, hydrants, and firefighter outfit readiness
- Escape routes and emergency lighting from the machinery space
Operationally, the ship’s emergency procedures / muster list and drills (linked to Chapters II-2 and III practices) also apply. Supporting technical standards are in the FSS Code.
