SOLAS was introduced after major peacetime shipping disasters — most famously the Titanic (1912) — showed that ships needed international minimum safety rules. The first SOLAS conference was in 1914; today’s widely applied text is the 1974 SOLAS Convention (with many amendments). Its purpose is to protect life at sea through common standards for construction, fire safety, life-saving appliances, radio, navigation safety, and related systems.
