SOLAS (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea) is the primary IMO treaty on ship safety. It sets minimum standards for ship construction, equipment, and operation so that ships are fit for the trade they undertake. National administrations (e.g. DG Shipping in India) give SOLAS force through their laws and surveys.
